Perth-based Edith Cowan University (ECU) is on the lookout for a new CIO to replace Garry Trinder, who will retire from the role in December.
Trinder, who has been at ECU since 2004 and in the CIO role since 2007, plans to retire to make way for other interests including running for the local council and spending more time with family.
The successful candidate should be an IT professional suitable for a traditional CIO role who can lead the university IT team.
“The Chief Information Officer will provide strong leadership, vision and direction for the provision of effective and efficient management and work with key stakeholders for the delivery and operation of ICT solutions for the organisation, to enhance research and learning and teaching,” according to an advertisement on job site, Seek.
According to Trinder, the university always has a raft of IT projects on the go at any one time, with a pipeline of about 100 projects including the transition to a virtual desktop infrastructure and the upgrade of ECU’s entire network and wireless infrastructure to take place in 2012-13.
“Since I’ve been with ECU we’ve focused a lot on improving our IT governance, we’ve enhanced our student management systems, our learning management systems and we’ve implemented a project culture and a project office,” Trinder said.
“I think the culture of the organisation has changed, we have moved to a project culture as previously we were very technology driven,” he said. “I’ve got a mantra of enterprise led not technology driven so we’re responding far more to what the enterprise wants and we’ve incorporated that into our governance frameworks and processes in terms of prioritising supply and demand for ICT resources.”
Applications close 28 September.

Guidance for Calculation of Efficiency (PUE) in Data Centers
The benefits of determining data center infrastructure efficiency as part of an effective energy management plan are widely recognised. The standard metrics of Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and its reciprocal Data Center Infrastructure Efficiency1 (DCIE) have emerged as recognised standards. This paper defines a standard approach to collecting data from data centers and showing how to use it to calculate PUE, with a focus on what to do with data that is confusing or incomplete. -
Backup and Recovery as we Know it is Changing
Increasing complexity in the data centre, including the rapid deployment of virtual servers, ever-expanding compliance requirements, and increasing amounts of sensitive data on mobile devices has put more strain on backup and recovery. Read on.
