IIA hires Anne Hurley as interim CEO

Follows resignation of Steve Burrell

Former Communications Alliance chief executive, Anne Hurley, has stepped into an interim CEO role at the Internet Industry Association (IIA) following the resignation of Steve Burrell this month.

Burrell quit for personal reasons, days before he was meant to start at the IIA. He was hired as a replacement for Peter Coroneos, who retired on 30 June after 13 years as chief executive.

Hurley was hired due to her past experience at the Communications Alliance providing input into the National Broadband Network (NBN) and digital economy regulations. She resigned from the organisation on April 2011 after six years as CEO and was replaced by John Stanton.

According to IIA chairperson, Bruce Linn, the appointment of Hurley as an interim CEO was “nothing new” in the industry.

“Former Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, spent more than two years as an interim CEO in the late 1990s,” he said in a statement. “It is about efficiently and effectively managing change in an agile manner following the retirement of a long-serving chief executive.”

Linn said that the IIA board’s strategy was to become more actively engaged with its 150 members and support the implementation of the National Digital Economy strategy.

“This vision will be pursued by Hurley and the board, and by taking a collaborative approach with the federal government and other industry participants to achieve these shared objectives,” he said.
