Acer tablets to deliver e-books to Australian high school students

Partnership with Pearson set to facilitate paperless classroom

A paperless classroom could be one step closer, with Acer announcing plans to deliver e-books to Australian secondary school students via its Iconia Tab range.

Acer hopes its partnership with Pearson Australia will result in the sale of over 5000 tablet devices, with Acer’s national education sales manager, Derek Walker, saying textbook material will now be easier to access.

“Our Iconia Tab will provide schools with easy access to essential textbook content via a digital tool that is lighter and more compact," Walker said.

"It will also provide frequent updates of new information that was previously unavailable with paper based books until its next edition."

The Iconia Tab A500 and W500 will now provide access to over 50 online Web books, with plans to licence more than 100 e-books to schools.

Pearson Australia’s head of sales for the schools division, Arthur Baker said the partnership was about changing the role of publishers and moving towards digital content.

“This is another step towards transforming ourselves from a traditional publisher of texts and other paper-based resources to a leading provider of digital learning formats," Baker said.

The A500 runs on Google Android Honeycomb 3.2, while the W500 runs Windows 7.
