NSW unveils live traffic app

New app can pinpoint motorist location and give real-time information about nearby traffic incidents

Live traffic information in NSW can now be accessed using an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, following the release of a free app providing up-to-the minute updates.

NSW Roads Minister, Duncan Gay, unveiled the new app, which through a built-in GPS function can pinpoint a motorist's location and give them real-time information about nearby traffic incidents.

The app will allow drivers to see images from NSW's 66 live traffic cameras, and provide incident updates, information on major events, road works and weather-related disruptions like flooding.

While only available on the Apple devices like the iPhone, a free data licence means apps for Blackberry phones and other formats could soon be developed.

Gay said the app provided motorists with information used every day by the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA).

However, he reminded drivers that it would be illegal to use the mobile app while on the road.

"The key is we have information - terrific information - down at the Traffic Management Centre and it would be good if we could share it," Gay told reporters in Sydney.

"This is an important instrument to help travel, but to be safe look at it before you drive and then plan your trip.

"If you need to do it on your trip, pull over safely to a side piece of road."
