Qld nurses still seeking payroll answers

Queensland Health must regain the trust of its nurses as the bungled payroll saga continues, the nurses union says.
Queensland Nurses Union (QNU) secretary Beth Mohle told reporters on Thursday that thousands of nurses were still being underpaid or overpaid each fortnight.
In Brisbane for the QNU annual conference, Ms Mohle also revealed Queensland Health had accused nine victims of its bungled payroll of fraud.
"This has been an unprecedented disaster that's gone on for far too long - 15 months," she told reporters in Brisbane.
"We have to find a way of turning this around because it cannot continue the way that it is."
Ms Mohle said at least three of the staff accused of fraud had been wrongly referred to police and she slammed Queensland Health for its heavy-handed tactics.
"The police should never have been the first port of call in terms of having the matter referred to them and having them turn up on the doorstep," she said.
"It's totally inappropriate and totally insensitive for it to be handled in that way."
Health Minister Geoff Wilson said the payroll problems were complex but said Queensland Health should take responsibility.
"If Queensland Health have got it wrong they should apologise to the worker involved," Mr Wilson told reporters.
He admitted the government still did not know how many staff were being overpaid or underpaid and said Queensland Health was working with the union to determine a figure.
"I've asked Queensland Health to make sure that's the number one priority," the minister said.
"There's been a significant improvement (in the payroll system) this year. It's not perfect and there are improvements being added month by month.
"Can it get better? Yes, it can. And that's the work that's being done."
