NSW Govt renews focus on ICT

The NSW Government has flagged a “front and centre” focus on the state’s ICT industry with the first Strategic ICT Forum to take place at NSW Parliament.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment, Andrew Stoner, said the forum, consisting of more than 80 industry and government leaders, would facilitate the engagement between those in the industry and the government’s ICT strategy.
“Industry must be engaged in the development of programs that stimulate the ICT sector and lead to innovation and efficiency within government,” Stoner said in a statement.
According to Minister for Finance and Services, Greg Pearce, the forum would create many new ICT opportunities in the NSW.
“Today’s NSW Strategic ICT Forum marks the beginning of new collaboration between industry and government in making NSW the leader in ICT,” Pearce said. “The NSW Liberals and Nationals Government has a vision to put ICT front and centre of government." “We want to be the leaders in ICT innovation and delivery.”
The state’s ICT strategy is underpinned by a number of principles including the alignment of service delivery goals in order to improve the quality of services, and gaining increased sustainable efficiencies through targeted investment in ICT, according to the Government.
Pearce noted there is significant demand from “tech savvy” residents in the state for the Government to keep pace and to provide them with the opportunities to interact with the Government.
“Whether it is through one stop shops or whole of Government apps, we need to make it as easy as possible for residents to interact with Government,” he said. “ICT provides the way to better deliver services to residents while at the same time enabling Government to be more flexible and efficient in the conduct of its business.”
Pearce also highlighted the importance of having industry, Government and the private sector on board to drive the agenda.
Victoria has long held the reins as the ICT “hub” of Australia with a number of wins in the industry throughout the last 12 months, including the creation of hundreds of jobs in the industry as a result of NBN Co’s Network Operations Centre, as well as a number of overseas based companies entering the local market and .
