Polaris to open $200 million Victorian data centre

Brisbane facility reaches capacity as plans ramp up to head south

Polaris has revealed plans to open its second Australian data centre in western Melbourne.

The $200 million, 7000-square-metre facility will be built on a 1.2 hectare site in the suburb of Derimut, with construction due to commence in July.

Springfield Land Corporation managing director, Bob Sharpless, said the company’s Brisbane-based data centre is at near capacity, in part due to new clients including NBN Co. The Brisbane facility also includes AAPT, Suncorp, NEC Citec, Ipswich City Council, as well as state and federal government departments among tenants.

Sharpless indicated the company had already secured two major tenants, including a major bank, as anchor tenants for the Melbourne-based data centre.

“Similar to the first Polaris Data Centre in Springfield, Queensland, this new Melbourne version will play host to some of the world's biggest organisations," he said.

The facility will have a load capacity of 10 megawatts and contain point solution racks up to 60 kilowatts. Security in mind for the centre includes biometric fingerprint scanners, bullet-proof glass and man traps.

“Critically, it will be the greenest data centre in Australia," he said.

With the recent Brisbane floods shutting down AAPT’s data centre and causing havoc across the IT community, Polaris said is hasn’t taken any chances on the location of its two Australian data centres. "The Polaris Data Centre in Queensland remained operational and accessible by road throughout the Brisbane floods because of Springfield's ideal geographical location and we are taking a similarly long-term approach in Victoria,” Sharpless said.

“Polaris is perfectly positioned close to one of Australia's major financial hubs but far enough away so that should disaster strike in the Melbourne CBD it will remain online."
