Software developers will have the chance to create mash up data and innovative applications as the NSW government opens up information on public transport, energy use and the environment for community use.
Developers will attend the apps4nsw Development Day weekend at the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo, but the prize pot has been significantly downgraded with prizes of up to $1500 for the best entries. Last year’s competition winners, Brad Spencer’s Demographic Drapes and the Smart Mashups team, took home $15,000 in prizes.
NSW chief scientist and scientific engineer, Professor Mary O’Kane, said the project was designed to allow innovative local developers to create useful solutions to improve community services.
“This initiative is about encouraging innovation and engaging communities on key state issues,” she said in a statement.
Transport NSW, Energy Australia, the RTA and the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water have provided data for the event based on priorities identified during the 2010 competition.
“One set of data that could improve the way we use public transport is real-time locations for Sydney’s Metrobus services, including arrival times at bus stops based on data received from on-board Global Positioning Systems (GPS),” Professor O’Kane said.
Energy Australia’s data set includes information on energy consumption and total and average electricity use by local government area.
The development day is open to all interested application developers, designers and members of the public.
