Queensland OneSchool project faces delay

Another information technology rollout is under fire in Queensland, with the state opposition comparing it to the bungled health payroll program.
The state government has delayed the final phase of its controversial $100 million OneSchool program, which is slated to provide a single student, curriculum, resource and financial management point for government schools in the state.
The third phase of OneSchool, which involves financial account keeping of receipts and invoices for hundreds of primary and high schools, was due for launch on January 4 but the program will now be rolled out over the next year. Regional officers were installed in October to facilitate the phased rollout and subsequent training of the new program.
A spokeswoman for Education Minister Geoff Wilson said the only reason for the delay is that teachers want more time to become familiar with the program.
Opposition spokesman for information and communication technology Scott Emerson said the delay "has all the signs of another health payroll debacle in the making and further exposes major problems with the state's IT service delivery.
"I understand staff had raised concerns that they didn't know how to operate the system and there were fears that it would lead to the massive problems we saw with the botched rollout of the health payroll system," Emerson said.
A new payroll system introduced by Queensland Health has caused major problems for staff and will cost $209 million to fix over 18 months.
