Tata Consulting signs $50 million contract with AGL

Infrastructure management services deal covers five years

Mumbai-based IT services company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has been awarded a five year infrastructure management services contract with Australia’s largest gas and electricity retailer, AGL Energy.

ANZ general manager, Varun Kapur, said Tata already been been working with AGL since 2007 on programs including gas trading, advanced metering and outsourced SAP ERP projects.

In a sign of the importance of the AGL contract to Tata, Kapur said the outsourcer had some 650 people working on the AGL account.

He also said the relationship had evolved over time from a simple outsourcing arrangement to a full services deal covering consulting, implementation, outsourcing and support.

“We’ve been experiencing good traction in this market and have a good level of service," Kapur said. "There is a demand which is picking up.”

Kapur said Tata was working with other energy companies in the country but decline to provide names.

However TCS works with local companies such as Qantas and Woolworths and has experienced a 40 per cent growth rate across verticals such as energy, banking and retail during the past 12 months.

“We believe we have the scale across the verticals to expand the coverage we have so we’re looking to employ more staff,” he said.

TCS is hiring about 20 new staff a month, according to Kapur, and currently has some 1314 staff in the A/NZ region.

It is also chasing business with agencies within the state and federal government sector.
