Local satellite data POP goes live

Reduces traffic transmission distances and times

Brisbane-based Indigo Telecom Australia has launched a mobile satellite data service with a local point-of-presence (POP) connecting to a global IP network.

Indigo’s Stargate service claims to provide secure access to Australia’s first POP for Thuraya mobile satellite data traffic.

Chief technology officer, Yuval Hertzog, said the dedicated VPN, POP and global IP backbone will enable Indigo customers in the region to terminate all mobile satellite data traffic locally, reducing traffic transmission distances and times.

“It will increase security, performance, reliability and data integrity,” Hertzog said.

“We expect industries such as mining, oil and gas, long-haul transport, defence and government services will particularly benefit.”

Stargate offers a range of networking technologies including IP-Sec, ISDN, leased line and MPLS.

Indigo’s Brisbane POP is integrated into a hybrid communications network providing access to video and data services.

The network covers Australia, the UK, US, most of Asia and some European countries.

Hertzog said there is an “insatiable increase” in demand for communications in regional and remote areas without access to traditional terrestrial networks.
