Nook e-reader software ready for iPhone, iPod touch

Barnes & Noble also adds rating feature to Nook for iPod

Barnes & Noble released free Nook e-reader software for the iPhone and iPod touch today, along with updates to Nook for the iPad that provide content rating and more.

The bookseller also sells a Nook e-reader device but has always focused on making its collection of 1 million e-books available on other readers and computer platforms, a strategy not followed by all its competitors. The company said today it plans to continue to add more platforms and devices in the future, but didn't provide details.

For the iPhone, Barnes & Noble said it designed the Nook software to maximize e-book cover art and text to take advantage of the iPhone 4's high resolution retina display. The software also works with earlier iPhone and iPod touch models, however.

Nook software is unique in that it allows customers to share certain eligible e-books with other Nook software users for up to 14 days. Nook software is enabled for desktops and Android smartphones as well as iPads and now iPod touch and iPhone devices.

The update to the earlier-released iPad app provides a "rate" feature from one to five stars to let users sort their favorite books.

  • Setting a strategy for secure mobile printing
Where, when and how we work is changing. Increasingly, we’re doing business on the road, at the office without a dedicated workstation and from our home offices.
