The role of the CIO has become more about business priorities and driving revenue growth with CIOs in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region rating cloud computing and stability as their top priorities.
According to IDC’s Asia/Pacific Dynamic IT Benchmark 2010, the role of IT in organisations is shifting with CIOs receiving more KPIs directed at business priorities including cash flow management, revenue generation and product innovation.
IDC surveyed some 400 CIOs across the Asia-Pacific region and found the economic climate has resulted in this shift of work priorities.
"With the changing economic climate, CIOs are using a higher percentage of their 2010 ICT budget to develop and fund projects that increase business profitability and drive improved customer service performance. This reaffirms the changing role of CIOs today; the new breed of CIOs are expected to drive revenue growth instead of merely keeping their business running," according to IDC.
Other findings of the report included a high interest in cloud computing, with 44 per cent of respondents saying they are planning on initiating projects in the cloud and 46 per cent are planning to increase self-service strategies.
Social networks including LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter were popular amongst CIOs with 55 per cent saying they leverage a social media network and 64 per cent indicated a reliance on Web-based networks has increased. The popularity comes despite recent research indicating a dearth of social media policies in the workplace.
The 2010 CIO Summit is being held in Sydney next week. Stay tuned to CIO for comprehensive news updates and exclusive interviews.
