Exporters predict increase in business

Most Australian exporters expect to increase their exports and improve profitability in the next 12 months, a survey says.

The 2010 DHL Export Barometer has found 53 per cent of firms forecast an increase in orders over the next three months, with 69 per cent predicting an increase in the next 12 months.

The figures were the equal highest in the eight-year history of the survey.

Key export growth regions included Central and South America, South East Asia, China, Africa and India.

But the Middle East, the most favoured growth destination for Australian exporters last year, has fallen to 10th on the list.

Austrade chief economist Tim Harcourt said emerging markets in Latin America such as Brazil were attracting increasing interest from local exporters.

"Approximately 20 million additional middle class Brazilians are expanding their purchasing power at home and abroad, making it an attractive destination for Australian exporters," Mr Harcourt said in a statement.

The survey also found 59 per cent of exporters expected to increase their profitability in the year ahead.

The impact of the global financial crisis appeared to remain on financial markets, with 63 per cent of exporters saying they were finding it hard to secure trade finance.

Last year's report found 60 per cent of respondents foreshadowed a lift in exports, but just 38 per cent recorded an actual rise due to the high Australian dollar and impact of the global economic downturn.

"In 2009, world trade contracted by the largest amount in 70 years and Australia was the only industrialised country to achieve positive export volumes; a remarkable achievement by Australian exporters," Mr Harcourt said.

The survey of 601 Australian exporters was conducted by ACA Research.
