The late Mike Grime
Former ANZ IT chief Mike Grime passed away after suffering a heart attack in his home in France last Friday. He was 62 years old.
News of Grime passing shocked senior management at the bank who served alongside him during his role as managing director of operations technology and shared services (OTSS).
ANZ CEO Mike Smith said Grime, who retired in February 2007, will be fondly remembered by staff and former executive board members.
"It's clear he was highly regarded and a well-liked colleague. I know that Mike will be missed by many whose paths he crossed, and our thoughts and condolences go out to his partner Kate, family and friends.
"Mike was at home with Kate in France at the time of his passing."
During his four-year tenure, Grime was responsible for ANZ's global IT solutions, infrastructure, core support, back office payments, shared services, sourcing, and the bank's human resources program, People Capital, which helped the organisation train and retain staff.
He also oversaw the construction of two new sites in Bangalore and Melbourne, where he was based.
Prior to commencing his role at ANZ in 2003, he held a variety of senior IT roles including head of operations at Standard Chartered Bank over a 10 years tenure, where he oversaw large projects including the bank's Y2K program, the design of a future operating model, and the IT integration during the acquisition of Grindlays Bank.
Grime, a keen pilot, guitarist and graduate of Manchester University in the UK, also held senior operations and technology roles at Citibank for more than 12 years.
ANZ deputy CIO Kieran Griffiths will oversee IT operations until the bank sources a replacement for former CIO Peter Dalton who switched departments late last year.

Increasing Uptime and Efficiency with Switched PDUs - Two ways to use rack PDUs for more than just distributing power
Power distribution units (PDUs) play an essential role in delivering power safely and at appropriate voltages to servers and other network resources. A particular class of power distribution units known as rack Switched PDUs, however, is capable of performing additional functions that can help data center managers improve the efficiency and reliability of their IT infrastructure. This paper provides a brief introduction to rack Switched PDUs and describes two underappreciated yet powerful ways to take advantage of their advanced functionality. -

Web 2.0 in the Workplace Today
More than a decade after the term ‘Web 2.0’ was coined, many businesses are still nowhere near to taking full advantage of the collaborative technologies the term refers to. Undoubtedly, confidence is growing in relation to using tools such as Facebook, Skype, Twitter, and indeed many more organisations are using such technology now compared to even just a couple of years ago. But the fact remains that a worrying amount of businesses seem to be operating a ‘lockdown’ approach – an approach that I’m sure many Board-level staff know is simply not good for business in the long-term.
