NSW Education dept ups network analytics

In addition to welcoming in the 2006 school year, the NSW Department of Education and Training (DET) began operating its new network analytics software last week, which is set to service some 2600 sites and 1.3 million users.
The project represents a win for the local IT industry as DigiToll, developed by Sydney-based software company IdeaData, was chosen by the DET over imported products.
The department confirmed that the project to install and operate the software had begun but was unwilling to divulge any specifics at this time.
"DigiToll is being installed and we are therefore unable to comment on its effectiveness," a DET spokesperson told Computerworld. It is unlikely the department's ICT project team working on the installation will be able to comment before at least six months of operation.
A statement from IdeaData said DET has selected DigiToll to deliver "transparent control of Internet usage, network accountability for traffic content, and [WAN] optimization to the largest government network in NSW".
The software will give network administrators access to usage information of network-connected resources across departments and schools. DigiToll will enable DET to make "significant savings" on its current WAN spending and "regain control over content" travelling across its network, according to the company.
"[The] IdeaData win is especially impressive, as DET selected DigiToll after [an] extensive market appraisal and testing against leading product suites supplied by national and multi-national [vendors]," the statement read.
DigiToll customers include BHPBilliton, ac3, Macquarie Bank, the Commonwealth Bank, and IBM.
